Just wanted to let you guys know that I'm still alive, haha.  I'm feeling a lot better as of late, and have channeled my energy into another creative outlet, being C++ programming.  I love it!  I hope to create some Windows programs that I can release at some point.  However, I still am very much into design.  It's hard to be active on DA with so much life stuff going on, though.  I'll make it a point to be more active, but I need to come up with a few projects that I can focus on.

I definitely miss my DA friends, and wanted to let you guys know that I haven't forgotten about you. <3

So, as of right now, I'm back. :)  Look out for some new art soon. :D

Okay guys, so check it- I know I haven't been too active lately, though I admit I wish I had been.  I explained some of the reasons in the previous journal entry I'd written- the most important of which was the fact that my boyfriend had recently broken up with me.  Still recovering, but I'll be fine.  Thank you to everyone who expressed concern.

Anyway, so another reason why I haven't been on DA much lately is because most of my projects have been web development related, and to my knowledge, there isn't much of a community on DeviantArt for coders.  But I could be wrong!  I'd love to see if I can find one- or, if anyone has any groups they'd recommend, that'd be great, too.

Lately, I've been working on expanding my knowledge base, and have focusing particularly on Wordpress theme development.  Fun stuff!  I've also been working on improving my Javascript skills- or lack thereof, rather, haha- and I want to get into plugin development, or something like that.  I want to build a portfolio of work so I can begin networking with others who have the same interests as me, and are well on their way to success.  But, until I get some work out there, my talent is going to remain in the shadows.

That being said, I'm going to find some way that I can remain active on the site, while also doing something that I love.  And one thing's for sure, I LOVE supporting you guys, as you all have done for me, so I'm going to continue doing so. ;)

So, I'm sure it's obvious by now that I haven't been totally active on DA for a while.  For the past few months, I'd been working on a website update for a client, and just recently obtained a new one that I'm developing a site for.  Should be done pretty soon here.  So, needless to say, I've been lurking DA while remaining largely inactive.

In addition to the work I've been doing, my boyfriend just broke up with me a few weeks ago- or rather, I discovered that after a couple weeks of our "break" that he decided to completely break it off.  I was devastated.  I pretty much remained in my room and became uninspired to do anything.  I just wanted to drink, sleep, and cry.  I'm feeling a lot better now.  He and I are working on repairing our friendship before if/when we ever decide to get back together again.  But I'll approach that as it comes.

My friends have been incredibly supportive of me, and many have offered to take me out, so that I can feel some sort of happiness again.  And although I'm feeling a lot better, I definitely have my days where I just don't want to do anything at all.

The good thing, is that I've started to try and take better care of myself.  I began going for nightly walks- walking for at least an hour, and up to two.  I'm pretty proud of myself, because I remained pretty sedentary for a long time.  I also began changing my diet, by watching my portion sizes, not eating when I'm not hungry, and the like.  So, I'm planning on keeping up those good habits, so that I'll start feeling better about myself, and soon won't care whether or not my boyfriend and I reconnect.  I'm just going to try and "do me" for now.

In addition to that, my father's VA benefits finally went through!  (He filed a claim for disability due to his extensive military service, which allows my sisters and me to attend institutions of higher learning for free)  So right now I'm trying to figure out what school I want to go to.  I want to be a software developer/engineer.

Anyway, I figured I'd give you guys a little insight into what's been going on lately.  I'm planning on slowly working on getting some artwork out again, as I've fallen completely off the wagon for the time being.

Thanks for all your support, you guys!

So, I've been seeing all these mockups of what Deviant users believe Windows 8.1 explorer will look like, and quite frankly, I'm confused.  It's my understanding that Windows 8.1 is supposed to address some usability issues like the lack of a start-menu, giving you the option to boot onto your desktop, etc.  It isn't a whole new operating system.  So why I keep seeing mockup deviations of an entirely newly designed explorer, is beyond me.  The point of the update isn't a visual overhaul of sorts, it's just supposed to improve the user experience based on feedback from said users.  Perhaps in the next edition of Windows, they'll revamp the explorer design.

All that being said, my intent isn't to bash any DA members with explorer 8.1 deviations- I'm merely just making an observation.  I imagine the whole Windows 8.1 thing is definitely up for debate, so I'd like to hear you guys' thoughts on what you're expecting with the release of the new update.  Or, rather, what you would like to see?

I'm diggin' it!  I wonder what took them so long to add text formatting without having to add some HTML code.  I'm excited because it seems like DA is finally moving on up!  I'd like to see them implement some changes on the entire site design- similar to what they have done for this journal interface and the upload screen.

Do you guys have an opinion on the new journal writer?  Do you like it?  Don't like it?  Why?

Looking forward to hearing what you guys have to say!
I think it's time for some updates, don't you?  It's been over a year since I've released my first Windows 7 themes, and it's high time I revisit them and make some improvements.  Is there anything you guys would like to see in the updated versions?  What kind of theme are you looking for?  In your opinion, what makes a theme good?  I want to know all these things because I want my themes to be something you guys would like to try and use.  Thank you for any feedback you might have!

I don't know about you, but I think the Chinese have application design down PAT- same with web design. With the discovery of 360 and QQ software, I feel like my cup runneth over!  I simply CANNOT get enough.  I was learning Chinese before, but I want to master it just so that I can utilize their software!  (I'm using it anyway, though- Google Translate has been my best friend as of late.)

Lately, I've been using a Chinese chrome derived browser called: 360极速浏览器 (360 Speed Browser).  It's incredibly beautiful, secure, and I've had an incredibly pleasant experience with it over all.  And the best thing is that the UI is in English, although some features are in the native Chinese.  This is the website, here: se.360.cn/five.html?=huanying.  I've also been trying out additional browsers, including 360 Security Browser, QQ Browser, and Maxathon Cloud Browser.  All are incredible, but for now, I feel at home with 360 Speed Browser.  I would highly recommend it, especially if you're comfortable with Chrome.  The browser has it's own specialized app store (Chinese), but you can also download and install apps from the Chrome App Store- which is something I really appreciate.  I can't live without Speed Dial 2!

Browsers haven't been the only thing to catch my eye, however.  I downloaded a Chinese PinYin input IME that integrates with Microsoft Windows from the makers of Sogou Browser.  And then there's this really neat image editing software called 光影魔术手4 (Magic Light 4).  Similar to Adobe Photoshop Elements, I think.

All this being said, I think I'm going to start looking into application design and UI design (I don't really know the correct terms), as I feel really inspired now!  I think I'll be serious in learning  Chinese so that maybe I could do some business overseas someday.

Lastly, I'll be uploading screenshots of most of the software in a separate gallery with descriptions!

Check Out My Tumblr!

Tue May 21, 2013, 11:09 PM

I recently coded a theme from scratch for my own personal tumblog, and I thought it'd be cool if you guys had a look!  I wanted to keep it pretty minimal with a focus on content, and am still not completely done.  I still have a few kinks to work out, like the pagination, as well as the like and reblog buttons.  The thing I am most proud of is the fact that I enabled a few customizable options, like a custom background color, or your choice of an image.  I'm thinking of submitting it to Tumblr when it's complete to be evaluated and hopefully accepted.  I'll have to look into that.

So, I completed my second EVER digital brush artwork today.  It took me all day.  I've always considered myself good at drawing but I never though about using digital media as a means of creating.  The first time I completed one was a couple years ago for my boyfriend's birthday.

That being said, I think I'm going to create a folder in my DA gallery for such conquests, and hopefully I'll see some improvement over time.  I'm really excited to unveil my first digital brush artwork for DA!  Customization will likely be put on the back burner for the time being while I sharpen my painting skills.  Thanks for your support guys, and I look forward to sharing more of my work with you!

Premium Membership Almost Over

Journal Entry: Thu Dec 6, 2012, 2:56 PM
Well, my premium membership given by =Neil78b has almost reached its end.  I must say, it's been a pretty awesome ride.  I can't thank him enough, and sent him a personal thank you note to express my gratitude.  Honestly, I can't even believe that it's been TWO years since I've joined DA.  I remember when I first became a member, I wasn't very active on the site because I didn't know how to get involved.  But gradually, I started making wallpapers and mockups, and talking to people with the same interests as me, being graphic design and desktop customization.  To date, I've had over 12,000+ page views, 11,000+ downloads on my two themes, Shiroi and Kuroi, alone, and over 2,000 comments within this two year time span.

I must say, I'm incredibly proud of myself.  And it's not going to stop here.  I plan on being a member of this community for a very long time, and I look forward to sharpening my skills as the years progress.  I can't tell you how much I've improved my art in these 2 years alone.  When I look back at my very first mockup (seen here: vanessabanessa89.deviantart.co… compared to the revised concept (seen here: vanessabanessa89.deviantart.co…, I'm almost in shock by how far I've come as an artist.

Here is my latest mockup, done several months after the revised "Orange Crush" one: fav.me/d548nwr (As great as this concept is, it was pointed out that it needs to have more contrast to be easier to see, to which I definitely agree.  But beautifully designed, nonetheless!)  This is my most recent one as of now.

Anyway, I just want to thank everyone for their continuing support, and I hope I have provided the same for you.  I'm definitely looking forward to the next 2 years, and how much I'll grow in that time!

I'm working now so I haven't been as active as I would like, but I'm definitely going to be finding time to create more things for you guys.  I've been wanting to make an icon pack or UI elements pack for a while now.

So that's all for now!  Cheers, and here's to the next 2 years!~ *Raises Glass*

Love,
Vanessa

Update!

Fri Aug 3, 2012, 1:47 PM

Oh my goodness, guys...  What a week!  I started my new job on Monday, where I'm working at a call center selling magazine subscriptions to help raise money for two non-profits: Special Olympics, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).  The hours are great, and the trainer is excellent, but the job itself just takes SO much out of you.  Not sure how long I'm going to be able to keep up with this!  I'm looking for a new job immediately, and I'll probably resign from the position within the next week.  My boyfriend is also currently working there, and he's thinking the same thing.  Even funnier is that the friend that referred me to the company is also talking about leaving.  I guess I'm just not cut out for it.  The GOOD news is that I've lost some weight since working there.... since I haven't really had time to eat, haha.  They give you a 10 minute break for every 5 hours, but if I have to go to the restroom, then it's taken from my 10 minutes.  Not exactly used to that.  In general retail, you can go to the restroom so long as you have someone to cover the floor while you're out.  It's never an issue.  The cool thing is that since getting this job, my boyfriend and I have never been closer since we're basically going through the same thing... and it's not easy in the least bit.

Anyway, so needless to say I haven't been entirely active on this site for the past week.  Today I finally have a day off, but I go in at 8am tomorrow morning, then I have another day off on Sunday luckily.

I miss you guys!

Wish me luck, haha.

Clean Slate

Tue Jun 19, 2012, 4:01 PM

That is what my next mockup/VS is going to be called!  I wanted to wait until the mockup was done to break the news, but I'm really excited to say that it's coming out quite well!  It's a clean, white and gray theme that I think you guys will love!  I'll be done with the mockup today, so I'll upload it here on Deviantart later.  I'm really liking how it has come out so far, and it is partially inspired by the website I am making for a client who owns a flower shop.  Fun stuff!

Shiroi and Kuroi

Fri Jun 15, 2012, 3:57 PM

I think it's time to jump back in and make some significant changes.  I've left the project alone for quite some time now, and I'm ready to start working on them again.  There are several people that expressed some alterations they'd like to see, and I'll be considering those when I begin working with these themes again.  When they're updated, I'll rename them Shiroi V2 and Kuroi V2.  I hope you'll like them!

Using kiko11's Journal Skin!

Tue May 29, 2012, 10:34 PM

...and I have to say that I really like it!  Anyway, I apologize that I haven't been to active on here as of late.  I'm currently working on an e-commerce website for a flower company that is proving to be more difficult than I originally thought it would be.  The design is completed, but now I'm trying to port it to Wordpress.  I'll be sure to give you guys the link once it goes live!  Anyway, that's pretty much it for now.  I want to also begin improving my Windows 7 themes, but I don't have the time at the moment since I currently have other priorities.

Thanks for your continued support!

New Monitor!

Journal Entry: Thu May 17, 2012, 12:19 AM

I called my boyfriend yesterday to let him know that I was on my way to his house, and when I did, he mentioned that he was selling his monitor for $65 to earn some money for Diablo III.  Knowing that I was going to get paid today, I jumped at the opportunity!  My previous resolution was 1650 x 1080, and now I have a beast 1920 x 1200!  It also has a lot more components, and settings.  Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase.  It's a little dated, as I can't find the drivers for this particular monitor ANYWHERE, but I'm not complaining.  Hoping Windows downloads them the next time it searches for updates.  Now all I gotta do is ask him about his extra ram, and I'll be all set!

Hey Guys!

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 23, 2012, 12:09 PM

I'm not dead, I promise, haha.  As you probably already know, I'm still very much active here on Deviantart, but lately have had a lack of artistic direction on where to go from here.  Currently, I'm casually working on another VS in my new Adobe Photoshop CS6.  Apparently they've released a beta for trials.  Pretty neat, huh?  It has a dark grey interface instead of the typical light grey one we're all used to.  Looking forward to the full version!  If you want to try it, you can find it here! labs.adobe.com/technologies/ph…;

Anyway, so what have all you guys been up to as of late?  For my American friends, if you're in school then the end of the semester/quarter/term is coming up.  Hope you all are looking forward to your summer vacation.  I, myself, am looking for work, and it's proving to be a more difficult process than I would've ever imagined.  It can be emotionally draining, so I've been taking steps to try and take care of myself better (i.e. learning about my body, eating better, looking into some effective exercises...) so that I can be in tip top shape.  I feel like it's also easier to deal with life's hardships if you're physically and emotionally healthy. ;)  It's a goal of mine to be able to confidently wear a bikini with summer (along with 4587491876546 other girls, I'm sure), so I need to hop on the healthy bandwagon because summer'll be here before you know it.

So that's it!  Do you guys have any plans or goals for the summer?  Anyone going to travel with year?  Anyone going to Comic Con (Comic Con is hosted in my home city of San Diego, CA!)?  There's so much to do!  On my list of things to check out are:

Sea World
Zoo
Del Mar Fair
Imperial Beach Sand Castle Event

...and much more!

My Direction.

Journal Entry: Fri Mar 23, 2012, 4:22 PM

Trying to figure out what I want to do next.  I go through these phases where I'm totally enveloped in my work for several hours at a time, and so I complete projects pretty quickly.  Then, I lose interest for a while, before picking it back up again.  That, and my hobbies aren't all that focused, as I tend to find new things that I want to try out and get into.  Does this happen to anyone else?  Regardless, I'm planning on completing my Orange Crush VS based on the concept I've released, and other minimal/red concept that I was given the PSD for.

So yeah, just a short update on what's going on.  I'm still very much active on the site- I try really hard to keep up with everyone's comments and the like, but I've been receiving so many favs that I'm no longer able to respond to most of them.  So, I DO promise that I'm appreciative, but I cannot pay individual attention to them at this time.

Anyway, happy theming, y'all!

Clear Dark News

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 16, 2012, 3:02 PM

Okay, so here's what's going on with the theme.  I haven't touched it in the while, because I've kind of lost my motivation to since I find dark themes difficult to develop without experiencing theme-breaking bugs and whatnot.  So, what this means is that I'm likely going to start over and re-design it in Photoshop and work on importing the images into WSB again.  I really don't want to abandon this project, so I'm going to stick with it, and hopefully it will come out even better in the end. ^_^  Changes will include increased usability, by providing more contrast between the elements in the theme, lightening the text, and the like.
This next one I release will hopefully be a 1.0, and not a beta.  So, for those of you who are watching me, keep an eye out for it!
